This year my suitcase
American Vacation (bottom picture above) will be part of the national touring exhibit
Rastros y Cronicas: Women of Juarez related to the femicides in Ciudad Juarez organized by The National Museum of Mexican Art in Chicago.
At the same time,
Rigo Maldonado and I continue to educate on the Femicides in Juarez through art activism workshops. On April 18, we presented a two-part workshop at the Social Justice Summit at Cal State Fullerton in Orange County. Subjects of activist art in this workshop covered appropriate iconography, sensitivity towards social issues and cultural values, the power of words in art, the history of art that has created social change, and the sharing of artistic expression and social art that transcends age and cultural barriers. A pink banner that Rigo created for the marchers to carry on the V-day action at the border of Ciudad Juarez and El Paso in 2006 (3rd picture from the top), was re-purposed as part of an on-going series of workshops (1st & 2nd pictures above). There are 420 squares of fabric (that represented each victim woman in 2006), now being decorated by the community for a future community exhibit.
