Using Poetry to Learn Two Languages

Poetry is a great resource for learning a second language because the cadence, rhyme, rhythm, and patterns of a language are often reflected in poetic offerings. Having children chant rhymes and songs in the target language provides opportunities for weaving sounds throughout the mouth, practicing words, playing with the rhymes, and becoming comfortable with the strangeness of the new language.

On Dia de los Muertos

Where to begin?

There were no cultural celebrations recognized in my household. I was raised in the Baptist Church where the simplicity of worship was emphasized: no incense, no statues, no stained glass. There was however a big glass tub where you could be baptized and yes lots and lots of singing. My cultural "re-entry" began in college.
