Who are we, really?

As I reread the lives of the sucias, I am struck by the wonderful writing style that Alisa uses. I love the fact that we get to know each of our characters as they know themselves and how they see each other. What appears to be security and being together in one, is, in reality, a hidden bravado. What appears to be in control to others, is a thin veneer about to break. After reading the first chapter from Lauren’s point of view, who is your favorite character and why? Which character are you… Continue

The first time I met the sucias...

I was first introduced to the Sucias in 2003 on a trip to Mexico City. I needed a book to read on the plane and I was looking for a ‘tina writer. I had already read all of Esmeralda Santiago, Sandra Cisneros, and Julia Alvarez, so I was looking for a new voice and a friend introduced me to Alisa Valdes Rodriguez and said, “You will love this book.” I was not a chic lit sort of reader, so I had my doubts…but then again, a plane read should be fun,… Continue

Book Review

The Dirty Girls Social Club is a great story about 6 Latina friends that are about as diverse as Latinas can be…they come in all shapes, sizes, colors, and backgrounds. What they do have in common is a shared heritage of being Latina in America, highly educated, not living in poverty, and sharing a common bond of friendship that cannot be shaken, no matter what trials and tribulations life brings them.

Alisa uses a very unique style for telling us the story that is sure to charm some… Continue

MUST SEE SUMMER MOVIE..:

Growing up is hard to do

In the movie, How the Garcia Girls Spent Their Summer, America Ferrera (Real Woman Have Curves) plays the role of the 17 year old daughter/granddaughter…and is she AWESOME!! She gives a beautiful performance of coming of age, trying to find out who she is, breaking with tradition and keeping with tradition and discovering for herself, who she is and who she wants to become. Like the typical girl in transition, sometimes she is very grown-up and at… Continue

MUST SEE MOVIE...

OMG…I went to see HOW the GARCIA GIRLS SPENT THEIR SUMMER and was totally charmed, I laughed so much at this warm and beautiful rendition of 3 generations of Latinas who are living and breaking the stereotypes that we all know so well and that we all love. The movie traces a summer of love, growth, understanding, and caring of three women related by blood, church, religion, and traditions…and what happens when our traditions no long serve us? And how does one deal with a mother’s awakening…and… Continue

old project : belly cast

i was commissioned by a friend to do a belly cast for her. i had NO clue what this meant, but after she explained that she had already made the cast and all i had to do was decorate it, well, that seemed interesting. i knew she was a fan of frida kahlo and after giving me complete artistic license, it took me [oddly enough] nine months to come up with this:

silk scarf

silk2-photob

this is a preview of the second silk scarf. i was going for a coral sort of color but instead ended up with something more along the lines of dusty rose. the camera is misbehaving [can't seem to get the flash working, so i'm letting the battery charge, just in case], but i’m mainly having trouble with warm tones in warm incadescent light. i may need to switch out my light… Continue

RADIO INTERVIEW

On April 22, 2008, I was interviewed by a radio station in Lanhan, Maryland. Don't ask me how they found me. I just got a request in my e-mail. It was nice because they asked for 12 questions in advance, 6 about me & 6 about my book, CHOOSE ME; therefore, I had the answers prepared. However, the host did ask me a couple of questions that came out during the interview that I had not sent. Though I had been interviewed on the radio before, I was nervous, especially because I… Continue
