Yesterday, I set up shop outside the gallery Autobody Fine Art on the island of Alameda, California. What an incredibly sunny day with clear blue skies. I'm a native Californian but I was astounded by the weather. A group of "muerte" vendors set up shop and sold to the locals. It appeared that Dia de los Muertos had not yet come to the ISLA but the locals were ready for our artwork. It was a very family friendly group attending Isla de los Muertos with a fusion of Halloween and Dia de los Muerto…

To start with, Beat Box Armada is hitting the left coast! On November 3rd, a Tuesday night, my talented lil sis, Maria Calderon, a singer/songwriter, is performing with this great group of musicians, designers & artists, (including me;).
I also wanted to spread the word that her debut album is officially out! It’s called, Manik, and I would describe it as sultry latin lounge, downtempo, electo-acoustic grooves. Take a listen & pick one up here:

I never used to be sketchy. I used to pride my freestylin’ ways of crafting wherever my thread or glue would take me. Even when I began writing my newspaper craft column eight years ago, I preferred to make things up as I went along.
That changed last year when I

Been back from New Orleans for about a week and a half. I can still feel the heat. The humidity hangs on my skin like a thick blanket making it hard to move quickly. NOLA Time. I'm still on NOLA time and energy. I wish it could last.
New Orleans never disappoints me. The overwhelming humidity immediately lets you know who's boss. No rushing in this weather. It feels nearly impossible to move quickly. You know, that is really okay with me. In San Francisco, I hate the heat. In New Orleans I almo…

I posted a piece on my blog, www.Color Conversations.com about the perception of Hispanic/Chicana color palettes and how it's affected me personally as a Latina artist. Here's an excerpt:
__________________________________________________________________________________
"It’s easy to stereotype a culture with a particular color palette, and Hispanic cultures, like Mexico are often seen by Northern neighbors through a lens saturated with color. The tint of that lens, saturated with stereotypes ca…

NI UNA MAS by Abel Salas
Ni una mas
Not one more
Tear or muffled
Scream in the
Back seat of
Your drug runner
Suburban with
tinted windows
Ni una mas
Not one more
Flower left
Near the marker
Where she was
Last seen
No more hiding
Behind the putrid
Hole in your soul
Ni una mas
Not one more
Broken hearted
Mother who
Still doesn’t know
What became
of her child
Ni una mas
Not one more
Photo of her
Pressed lovingly
Into a frame
Placed on a wall
Where sighs
will reside
Ni una más
Not one more
Bloody m…
