Under the Same Moon…La misma Luna
For a great holiday treat, get or rent a copy of Under the Same Moon or la misma luna…
A beautifully done film that allows us to explore the immigration issues and concerns in all of its complexities, in all of its drama and what it means for those who are caught in the battle with no where to turn.
We see the desperation of the poor, the lives of the haves, the depths we are drawn to just to provide for the families we love and care about, the despair that w…

I'm looking forward to interacting with other Latina Artists. This is a great format for us. Has anyone seen the Frida Kahlo exhibit?
I was fortunate to have seen it in Philadelphia. I have to admit that I have never been in agreement with her political affiliations, but I have always admired her stamina and persona plus art even before she became a big hit.
It was awesome to see these gigantic banners hanging from light poles with her image, and then an incredibly large banner on the museums…

St. Jude Medical Center Project
Hello:
You may or may not have heard from us in the recent past, but we are writing again to fully explain this idea. I’m from an online blog called Shooting Stars and we are working on a project. You see, I had hoped that if we were able to use a site and make a book and if people bought it, we’d make some money off of it…so we could give about half the proceeds away. I didn’t say anything because I wasn’t sure if that was how it would w…

As I reread the lives of the sucias, I am struck by the wonderful writing style that Alisa uses. I love the fact that we get to know each of our characters as they know themselves and how they see each other. What appears to be security and being together in one, is, in reality, a hidden bravado. What appears to be in control to others, is a thin veneer about to break. After reading the first chapter from Lauren’s point of view, who is your favorite character and why? Which character are you mos…

The Dirty Girls Social Club is a great story about 6 Latina friends that are about as diverse as Latinas can be…they come in all shapes, sizes, colors, and backgrounds. What they do have in common is a shared heritage of being Latina in America, highly educated, not living in poverty, and sharing a common bond of friendship that cannot be shaken, no matter what trials and tribulations life brings them.
Alisa uses a very unique style for telling us the story that is sure to charm some readers an…

Growing up is hard to do
In the movie,
How the Garcia Girls Spent Their Summer, America Ferrera (Real Woman Have Curves) plays the role of the 17 year old daughter/granddaughter…and is she AWESOME!! She gives a beautiful performance of coming of age, trying to find out who she is, breaking with tradition and keeping with tradition and discovering for herself, who she is and who she wants to become. Like the typical girl in transition, sometimes she is very grown-up and at others she is s…

OMG…I went to see HOW the GARCIA GIRLS SPENT THEIR SUMMER and was totally charmed, I laughed so much at this warm and beautiful rendition of 3 generations of Latinas who are living and breaking the stereotypes that we all know so well and that we all love. The movie traces a summer of love, growth, understanding, and caring of three women related by blood, church, religion, and traditions…and what happens when our traditions no long serve us? And how does one deal with a mother’s awakening…and a…

Hi everyone,
For those of you who attended the San Jose Glass Artist Alliance Farmer's Market last Saturday, you'll know it was a hit! We had a nice flow of traffic and lots of visitors to our table. Our blackberries and candlesticks were the most popular, with chili peppers and pendants following closely behind. It was a great experience for us and we met some wonderful people.

i was commissioned by a friend to do a belly cast for her. i had NO clue what this meant, but after she explained that she had already made the cast and all i had to do was decorate it, well, that seemed interesting. i knew she was a fan of frida kahlo and after giving me complete artistic license, it took me [oddly enough] nine months to come up with this:

Today the Los Angeles County Museum of Art (LACMA) hosted an art talk with Sandra de la Loza and Harry Gamboa, Jr. as part of the Chican@ art show called
Phantom Sightings. Many Chican@ artists, in the Los Angeles scene feel that they have to take a pause for the main stream to catch up with what is going on in their art community. Some of the work in
Sightings is amazingly brilliant, other pieces are poorly crafted and their meanings fall into the shadows. Written text to explain…

This week I am doing my usual damage control for having a pen that is mightier than a sword----not to mention my a sharp tongue. It cost me a Japanese dinner and lots of fast talk. On the other hand, I was asked to be a blogger on LAeastside.com this week too. Well, I guess someone appreciates my wit. This is much better than the blog offer at SiTV. Who is SiTV anyway? They wanted me to write two articles a week in exchange for "exposure". Sounds like a part-time job without pay. "Exposure"! Are…
