*Artist Bio

Marie E. Sendejo was born and raised in the deep west side of San Antonio, Texas. Her first artistic influences came from watching her Uncle draw which ignited a passion within herself to learn to illustrate and strive to make art her career. Upon graduating from Providence High School she continued her education at Palo Alto Community College where a Professor introduced her to a 2+2 program with the University of Wisconsin- Madison. While attending art school in Wisconsin she was introduced and fell in love with Graphic Design, and Printmaking techniques in particular Linoleum/Woodcutting. She received a Bachelors of Science degree in Art and Graphic Design in 2001 from the University of Wisconsin-Madison. While living in Madison she continued her strive to be an artist by freelancing as a graphic designer. A year later she moved to Salt Lake City, Ut where she is currently employed as a Marketing and Merchandising Manager for Franklin Covey. She continues her love for Graphic Design as a part time Adjunct Professor at Eagle Gate College in her spare time. Marie recently participated in a gallery show, highlighting local Chicano artist in Ogden UT.

Artist Statement

My work is a combination of memories and iconic influences in my upbringing that have shaped and molded my way of thinking. It wasn't till my move to Wisconsin that I realized that I took advantage of cultural surroundings in Texas and found myself drawing from any little experience as a child or adult to keep those memories alive. While attending college my education in the Chicano Movement of the late 1960's inspired the dedication of my creativity to the depiction of everyday events that cultivated the lives of Mexican Americans and other cultural upbringings based on my experiences growing up in San Antonio. Although, I have a Graphic Design background; I find that i can easily mix my work as a Graphic Designer and Printmaking to produce simple but iconic Fine Art. The combination of the two art forms are often a result of propaganda like work. As I continue my journey as an artist, I hope that I can continue to preserve my memories and document my perspective of the world that will influence people to look within themselves and find how much impact their lives and upbringings can be to others.
