Supporting Women and the Arts

I thought this would be a nice place to have members write a recommendation for a favorite book.

I am always inspired by the creations on this network and it just seems natural that what we read may have something to do with our levels of creativity.

I just finished reading "The Sum of Our Days" by Isabel Allende. It was a great read, really gives a glimpse into the authors life.

You have listed some of my favorites, I especially loved Eat, Pray Love.

Thanks for sharing
Maria

Dear Theresa,

I find the works of Sandra Cisneros, Leslie Marmon Silko, and Louise Erdrich imaginitive, challenging, and inspiring. You might want to check out _Caramelo_ by Cisneros, _Ceremony_ by Silko, and _Love Medicine_ by Erdrich. These are books I return to every few years. Up until a few years ago, I used to teach literature and my students always fell in love with these authors. Of the books on your list, I have read the Hayden Herrera biography of Frida and it's great and anything by Garcia Marquez or Alvarez is guaranteed to please. Hope this helps. Happy reading! Peace, Alesia

This is great! I am adding the member recommended books to my list. Since I am a teacher, summer is when I can really make a dent in the long list of what I have planned to read.

The website, "Shelfari" is good for staying organized with books. I use the site mostly because I like being able to "see" the cover of the book (you actually design a bookshelf and add books to it) and they have great features like recommended reads based on your favorite authors... if interested, you can see my shelf listed under member name Theresa B.

Right now I am reading Josefina Lopez' "A Hungry Woman in Paris". Although a friend (who is also a writer) commented that her writing is very popular with High School girls, I am finding Josefina's style to be simple, yet with metaphoric threads throughout. In this case, all things related to cooking and boy do we Mexicanos have a special relationship with food. I have a degree in English Literature and am feeling captured by the protagonist and her adventures in cooking. Maybe I'm digressing--LOL---but I like it and recommend it to others. We are lucky in East Los Angeles to have Josefina's theatre near us and to be able to join her for book readings and writing classes. She announced the other day that she is making "Real Women Have Curves" into a musical. Sounds fun!

Hello Latina Artist Members!
As I pack my bags (and books to read on the plane) for a visit to New Mexico (Leaving tomorrow!!!) I found myself thinking of this network... here is another book I highly recommend:

Mud Woman: Poems from the Clay
by Nora Naranjo-Morse

This book is a small paperback. Very thoughtful poems by Santa Clara-Laguna potter, Nora Naranjo-Morse. Here is a link to a bio on this amazing woman artist:

I hope to hear more of your top picks! Time to go book shopping for the summer! :)

Hi Theresa! A book I recently read and LOVED is by Alberto Ferreras and it is called B as in Beauty. I also recently read Sophie Kinsella's The Undomestic Goddess, it has been out a while, but it was new to me! Another good one is Josefina Lopez's Hungry Woman in Paris. Unsettling by Lynda Sandoval is funny and is a feel-good page turner.

I'm happy there are other avid readers here! Maybe we can start a book club!
