Chicana Artists in Cuba - May 2008

Havana, Cuba - Leslie Gutierrez-Saiz and Victoria Delgadillo have been invited to exhibit artwork at the "Decimotercero Festival Internacional de la
Poesia" in Havana, Cuba, May 26 - June 1, 2008. They are accompanied by Abel Salas, Reina Prado and Roberto Leni, noted writer/poets from Los Angeles who will present their work at the festival. Filmmaker Francisco Hernandez, of Smokin' Mirrors Studios in Los Angeles will document the journey.

Thanks Maria! I have been so busy getting everything together, so this is the first chance I've had to 'discuss'--ha. Did you know that there is a $10,000 fine for Americans to travel to Cuba? I figure if Michael Moore did it on film, no one will focus on us. It’s the risk you take as an artist, no? I haven't had any death threats because of my art (yet), but I do know artists who have. In comparison, this seems like a mild stand. As soon as Fidel Castro is gone, it’s predicted that the United States will once again resume their friendship with Cuba. I'm sure all the American corporations are salivating to open a mall there ASAP! This trip will allow us to see how Cuba is now, before it becomes another Las Vegas. Sad. Yes, I will take pictures, in fact I am filming a poetry DVD there with one of the poets in our group. So exciting!
